G&N Rubicon began as a small gear job shop, located in a 6,000-square-foot building in Santa Ana, California. Over thirty years ago, our founder, J.L. (Lee) Edwards, realized the potential of a company specializing in gear cutting services and dedicated to the exacting requirements of the aerospace industry. Lee’s business acumen and industry knowledge proved a winning combination. By 1972, G&N Rubicon had outgrown its original quarters and moved to its current 25,000-sqaure-foot building in Santa Ana.

In 1973, Mel Edwards joined G&N Rubicon as a sales representative, and the company experienced a significant increase in its gear service business. By 1976, G&N was one of the largest gear cutting manufacturers west of the Mississippi. In 1986, Mel Edwards and Neal Edwards, two of our founder’s sons, became co-owners of G&N Rubicon and focused on the gear cutting service operations of the business.

1989 saw the need for expansion and a new direction for G&N Rubicon. We made the decision to enhance our services, and the company began to manufacture parts complete to customers’ specifications. By the end of 1991, this “custom” business represented well over half of our sales and provided the fuel for innovation and growth at G&N. During the following decade, this growth led to the acquisition of four other companies, including Rubicon Gear in Michigan with its advanced bevel gear technology. During the last five years, G&N Rubicon has built a top-notch management team and invested over $2.5 million in facilities and equipment to compete in the global market.

Today, G&N Rubicon has achieved the perfect, symbiotic balance between our gear service and custom manufacturing divisions. Along with our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, we employ the latest job-tracking computer technology and advanced CAD/CAM software. We also maintain our quality assurance system in compliance with ISO 9001:2000, AS9100:2004 Rev. B, and comparable AGMA (American Gear Manufacturing Association) quality standards through Class 14. Our full range of gear capabilities include: Hobbing, Shaping (up to 56 Rc), Straight Bevel, Spiral Bevel, Worm Gear, Hard Hobbing, Splines (up to ten feet long), and Curvic Coupling.

“From design and prototype to short-run and production, both our service and custom customers benefit from the huge range of gear cutting, grinding and manufacturing capabilities available at G&N”, explains Mel Edwards, president. “Combined with an outstanding management team, experienced and dedicated craftsmen, and a continuing commitment to innovation, quality and value, G&N Rubicon is truly your high-performance gear solution for the 21st century.”
